Instant Chemistry

I wanted to post an excerpt of a shorty story I wrote almost 5 or 6 years ago. I have edited it off and on through the years. Its nothing great, its a chance encounter romance. I hope you enjoy.

Instant Chemistry
On the most exciting night of the year, you have to choose between boring and adventure? Which do you choose?

New Year’s Eve.

Katrina was out at Eros with Joshua, or as she had affectionately named him Borshua. The music playing in the background was a 1960 vibe; it reminded her of Jimi Hendrix or the Kinks, which was hard to find a rhythm to sway or dance to, but still entrancing enough to zone out.  Katrina found the song’s melody and began to sway to the music, trying to hide a yawn, as Joshua was on his 5th integration of why Meteor Man was a great movie. She has questioned, first thinking, does this man ever shut up, trying not to roll her eyes to the sound of his voice. Katrina wondered why she agreed to this last-minute date. Did she fall prey to the NYE trap going out when she just wanted to be home?  Katrina realized she needed more liquor to deal, with Borshua’s bland, monotonous voice.  He was great via text and email, precise with his words, and easier to talk to. Katrina guessed that maybe she loved his writing skills, and his oral communication abilities were lacking. The more she observed his mouth moving, she decided that he also lacked listening skills.  Katrina felt her eyes glazing over. The sound of the music pulsating, causing a nauseating feeling in her stomach, or was it his cheap perfume.  Katrina was brought back to reality by the sound of Joshua’s voice as he continued to talk about the movie.

“See, there is a pleasing off-kilter balance to the view of Jefferson’s world, where the good guys have all the best lines, but the baddies have a monopoly on dress sense,” Joshua said as he was moving his hands in frustrated circles, trying to make his point.

Katrina blinked rapidly, trying to bring herself back to reality; she let out a bored sigh; she was done with this boring conversation! Done with her date, why did she even agree to go out with this monotone rejected dwarf. Katrina shook the idea from her head, Joshua wasn’t that short, but he was short in stature.  Katrina began to daydream about being at home, in her footed pajamas watching the Miami Pitbull NYE special.  The music at the club went from upbeat to depressing; it had transitioned into some indie underground sound that would be better for an offbeat coffee shop and not NYE. Katrina, realizing that Joshua’s monotone voice and the music were causing a headache, excused herself for a drink at the bar. Joshua, looking rejected, said, “ok,” a bit of sadness tinted his voice.

Katrina disappeared into the crowd, wondering how she could escape this date without being a bitch.  She walked over to the bar; it wasn’t overly crowded for NYE, so she stood waiting for the bartender. When a tall, slender black man walked up beside her, they made instant eye contact so intense she was mesmerized by him.  He smiled, at her appearing intrigued to Katrina.  Katrina waited for the gentleman to say hi, but he went back to his drink.  She decided to initiate a conversation, “Hello.” He started smiling, showing off his dazzling white teeth. Katrina felt a connection. Katrina let out a nervous chuckle asking the gorgeous brown-reddish tone man, “Why are you smiling so hard?” He admitted, “I am not sure, but your smiled started it.” Katrina giggled at his response.  She was enchanted, but his low cut and smooth Umber skin tone, his downturned eyes with flints of gold interlaced the chestnut hue of his irises.

Well I hope you enjoyed this excerpt.

Until Next Time,

Che Michelle
