What Are You Reading this Summer ?

What Are You Reading this Summer?

As a  person who grew up in Baltimore during the 80s and 90s, you know about the summer reading competition. Kurt Schmoke was the mayor of Baltimore during this time.  He pushed the motto for the City to  “Baltimore, the City that Reads.” to increase the literacy rate in Baltimore.   The goal was to read as many books, you could win prizes and accolades for reading books.  One year I was in the top 10 for the City. I think I read over 100 books that summer. I loved reading and would read non-fiction books, especially about Indigenous cultures, science, and mythology.  Those were good times.

If you have a Goodreads account, then you know that GoodReads does a yearly Reading Goal. How many books can you read in a year?  It was a nostalgic reminder of the times I would beast out almost 3 books a week.  It helped me reconnect to reading, for fun, for knowledge, and to read a different perspective on life. So this summer, I would like to try to finish a book a week. I think it is feasible.  I have about 12 books I would like to complete. Summer is about 15 weeks, if you count, from memorial day to Labor Day. That is about 15 or 16 books a week based on length, time, investment, and so forth.  Will I Be able to post 15 reviews?  I don’t know? I have so many books waiting for me at home, and on my kindle, I probably have enough to get me through until the end of 2021.

For now, we shall see how many books I  complete and if I go back and read old books I brought.  I don’t want to go back to my childhood because I have already lived it. Still, I want to capture a  fleeting feeling of reading and seeing how much knowledge I can consume in a finite amount of time.

Until Next time,

Che Michelle
