I had high hopes for writing in the month of February, and it fell flat. I did keep up with reading and read several books. I am still stalled on two other books. I have read 8 books, slowed on 2, and started on a new book this morning. My subtotal of book 11 subtracts the 3 incomplete books. I have a 72.7% completion rate for February. I would like to talk about what I learned from reading this Month. One that YA (young adult) books are excellent. The world-building, and the depth of emotions, that is expressed. More adults should read YA books; they offer me all the best in writing. You get conflict that is not too heavy, Adventure, mystery, humor, and people finding their way in life. While reading the YA book, I remind myself what it’s like to be in my teens but also see the world through a young adult’s eyes again.
Another great lesson learned in February was Amazon Shorts are amazing, great reads. These shorts do several things; one introduces you to genres you may avoid. Amazon Shorts has a series to test the waters if you aren’t sure about Mystery or Crime fiction. If you want to read people’s real-life stories but don’t want to read a full memoir, Amazon Shorts have several series where you can read these stories and see if you are into biographies. I recently finished Black STARS: A galaxy of New Worlds and this series renewed my love of Science Fiction. If you want to get into Dean Koontz but don’t have the time for an entire novel, Amazon has a six-book novella series written by Dean Koontz to test the water of his writing. My next side challenge is to read one of these series once a month. I have read 12 of the 30 series available and will attempt at least 5 more for 2023.
Third, some books are not for you, and it’s okay to admit. For 2023, I aimed to complete and read my unread books in my Kindle and Play Books. One of the books I have started and stopped twice is Memoir “Token Black Girl” by Danielle Prescod. Around Chapter 7, I admitted this book was not for me. Does this mean this is a bad book? HELL NO!!!! While reading it, I couldn’t connect with her experiences growing up in the Northeastern United States. I will do my best to complete this book for sheer will, but as of February 22, 2023, I am stuck on Chapter 7. What goals do I have for March 2023? Well, I really want to post at least 4 blogs a month. I want to talk about past books I read, which were terrific. I still hope to post more about books and wine and why certain wines go better with some books. But Wine goes with almost anything if you are creative enough to envision it . What are the takeaways from this post:
- I am still reading and read 8 books in one Month! Yes they were mostly novella/ Amazon shorts so what I read!
- Challenge yourself to read outside your typical genre. For example, if you read Romance, try Adventure. If you’re reading Non-Fiction, try a Murder Mystery.
- It’s okay to admit a book is not for you, but it doesn’t mean it’s lousy; there are plenty of awful books. The book may just not be for you.
Until Next time,
Che Michelle
