I read this book back in late 2022. I started to write this review and never finished.
One, how did this book only get a 3.6 on Good Reads? What are you, a villain, a cur, a rapscallion, a scoundrel, a cad, a rogue, a knave, a miscreant? Did I miss anything? This charming book has wit, humor, and a good lesson. Alexis Hall takes all the good parts of Regency fantasy with a bit of tongue-in-cheek romance and comedy that I can only describe as delightful. We (the readers) are introduced to two families, Valentine Layton, the Duke of Malvern, and twins Arabella and Bonaventure Tarleton. The novel starts with tears and fits of anger. The roller coaster of hijinks, revelations, and declarations throughout the book will have you giggling, laughing, and shaking your head in agreement.
Seeing people openly love whom they desired to love was so refreshing. As the main character, Bonny shines and keeps you enjoying his antics and quips. I am trying to remember the exact moments since I have not read this book in almost two years (I read it back in 2022). I can tell you this book stays on my mind. The slow-built love story, the moments of self-discovery, and the need to express oneself! This whole book is a gem and is worth a read. If this had to fall into any troupe, Enemies to Lovers meets Runaway Bride with a splash of Unrequited love. If you can read this book this February, do it! I sipped an excellent chardonnay called Eccentric. It is an Argentina Chardonnay, so it is more tropical fruit-forward than Oaky, and I love that about this wine. Drinking this wine was an excellent feeling as Valentine whined about not having a bath. Bonny goes off to have a tryst with an of-age and manly stable aid. The way Valentine longs after Bonny while still being annoyed. The chardonnay perfectly paired with all the quips, kisses, and confessions of feeling.
Read this and the follow-up book; this is a great weekend book! Get your favorite bottle of wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, or fruit tarts—such a delicious book to read in 2024. Listen to Taylor Swift’s “New Romantics” or Victoria Monet and Kehlani’s “Touch Me” for a bonus. How can I forget to include Sam Smith and Troy Sivan?
I recommend re-reading this book and making a playlist for this book.
Until Next time,
Che Michelle
