I read two other books by Jessica Cage; I finished one, “Siren’s Call,” but never finished the other, “Jinn.”  At the end of 2024, I decided to read this book; it looked good, the reviews were terrific, and I was intrigued to see Mrs. Cage’s approach to summoning a demon lover. I read the book after Christmas to decompress from Holiday stress. Let me say that Mrs. Cage hit the ground running. Rayna is a Thirty-something Black woman navigating dating. I resonated with Rayna within the first pages. I know the feeling of “Booty Juice” from dealing with a man and not in a fun way 😈. After a bad date, Rayna summons a demon and proceeds to turn him out. Yes, all within the first two chapters. I was hooked. As the story unfolds, I discovered that Rayna’s experiences with her friendships were relatable. Her dating life also mirrored common experiences of feeling out of place in society. I was hooked on Rayna’s bold personality. I stayed because of her complex relationships with her best friend Keri. I was also intrigued by the budding romance with Metice. Rayna and Keri’s relationship made me think about my relationships with my friends. You have some friends who are just there. Others go to hell and back for you. What happens when those friends are tired? Jessica Cage did a fantastic job portraying friends who get exhausted in complicated friendships.  Still, if they are loyal friends, they snap into action anytime and anywhere. The story shows how she and Keri’s relationship dealt with one friend being in a relationship. The other friend was still dating. Finding out Keri stood by Rayna as she dealt with personal issues, and the other friends just stood by judging. I want to explore Rayna and Metice’s chemistry. However, Keri and Rayna’s friendship is what stood out to me. The story also highlighted the true meaning of friendship.

Another part of the book I love is the consistent message that dating in today’s world is trash! Whether it was Rayna dealing with Booty Juice. Metice brings up how horrible men are every time they encounter a human man. Just men, in general, being horrible on a simple first date, Mrs. Cage highlights the pitfalls of being successful and dating in a modern age. I would be on the trajectory of summoning a demon boyfriend if I had found a spell book. I do know the power of words and intention do work; I mean, we have Ciara’s Prayer. I have experienced otherworldly effects from prayer and Beyonce’s songs. It is a long story and not for this blog.

Unfortunately, I did not drink any wine with this book. I read it on my lunch break, working out in the gym, and driving. If I had the opportunity to drink a wine for this book, I want to suggest either a Rose’. I believe in Romance Novels and Rose’ wine are a match, but honestly, it’s whatever you want to drink. I have been challenged to try Red Wine with more Romance novels(the jury is still out). I want to suggest the last wine I sipped, Amity White Pinot Noir 2022. It has terrific light berry and citrus notes with the slightest hint of honeysuckle. It is an easy-drinking wine and would be an excellent wine for Spring. I can see this wine complimenting the sweet moments in the book.

I can also see Red Tide Wines, a Barbera from Northern Italy. I would describe this wine as bold and a bit dry, with notes of Vanilla and cherry. I got this wine from In Good Taste, which complimented Ranya’s bold yet sweet, complex, and imaginative personality. Honestly, this book deserves to be read with a good red wine. It fits parts of the complex nature while being fun and flirty.

Until Next Time,

Che Michelle

P.S. Be careful summoning demons. You may end up with the love of your life. 👹😈
