Last Saturday, I was on one of my many adventures, but I wanted a book that would help me focus on finances. I told myself this month that I wanted to really get my finances in order. So I opened my Audible app and saw my favorite self-help financial baddie dropped a new audiobook. “Your Debt Plan: Reclaim your life and Get Paid.” The book hit the trifecta. I can listen while driving. It’s from my favorite financial baddie, and it will help keep me on track to read or listen to at least one self-help/personal development book each month.
Rachel Rodgers, Audible original: Your Debt Plan: Reclaim your life and Get Paid à https://amzn.to/4jDz72v. The book opens much like “We Should All Be Millionaires.” She begins with her past, how she ended up with the debt, and how she and her husband planned and worked to get out of said debt. Pause. The Rodgerts are Lawyers, so the potential to make more money in a short time is possible. She takes her time to explain, she knew it would be a lot of money owed after Law School. Rodgers, start by shifting your mindset. I have read quite a few books on debt and finance; each author has their own way of taking accountability for it. Mrs. Rodgers, use a technique that I instantly noticed a shift. Forgive yourself for the debt you incurred. I do understand that some people’s debts come from a lack of discipline. I believe most debt comes from trying to survive in America.

Rachel Rodgers has a strategic plan: if you sit and do her exercise, you will think of your debt differently, identify areas that can bring in extra money, and she gets real about some of the methods you will need to use to get out of debt. One of the steps she has readers take is to reframe their mindset and debt. Mrs. Rodgers will have you write a letter of gratitude to your debt, to see that sometimes debt is necessary. Need to get to work, and if there are no metro or bike lanes available, you have to buy a car. Want to be a Doctor? Well, you are 1000% taking out a loan. Once you reframe your mind, Rodgers takes off, envisioning your debt-free life and sitting down to map out how to tackle your debt and what works best for you.
Two things stand out about Rodgers: her debt plan, which resonated with me, and the reason I am utilizing her method. One realizes no amount of budgeting will get you out of poverty. As a person, you will need to find a way to make more money. Are you good at editing? You may have to edit articles or books. Are you great at organization? You may have to monetize your ability to organize. It sounds bad, but if you know it will take 10 years of work and sacrifice to pay off your debt, monetize a skill you’re good at, and apply the extra income toward it. You are out of debt in 4 years, not 10. Monetize your skills to the best of your ability and get out of debt. Also, Rachel Rodgers, do not use the “sacrifice everything” technique to get out of debt. I tried that for most of my 30s, I was miserable, and my debt just exploded. Realizing I can get out of debt, without a total sacrifice, but with well-planned adventures or excursions.
Overall, I highly recommend listening to this audiobook. Take a moment to make sure you can take notes and create a plan to get yourself out of debt. Yes, the steps are practical, but how Rodgers provides her steps to elevate your life, if refreshing, could be helpful. Because this book is an Audible original, you may not have Audible.
